Third party blues

Scholarship on America's minor parties has often been steered by opinions about how the political system ought to work, with comparatively little careful testing of the evidence. This book takes a more rigorous approach to the question of why such parties rarely break through.

The author focuses on the legal machinery of elections. He examines how ballot access restrictions and single-seat districts decided by plurality vote create obstacles that keep third parties from building lasting influence in American politics.
