Thirty Below
About This Book
Grace Hoeman was a doctor and mountaineer in Alaska who dreamed of reaching the summit of Denali, the highest peak in North America. She had come close before, but altitude sickness and a storm that killed seven other climbers forced her to turn back. Other expeditions refused to take her because she was a woman. A letter from another climber, who had been told she could join a team only if she stayed at base camp and cooked for the men, gave Grace an idea. She would organize and lead the first all-female ascent of the frozen mountain. Nearly everyone told Grace and her team it was impossible. Men had already walked on the moon, yet no woman had stood on the highest summits on Earth. The common belief was that women could not endure extreme altitude and brutal weather or haul heavy loads without help from men. The six women on the team refused to accept those limits. This account of the expedition follows them up the mountain. When disaster struck at the worst possible moment, the team's choices determined whether they survived and also how the world would judge women's ability to climb and endure the harshest mountains.
