This Is a Window

This rhyming picture book celebrates the power of a child's imagination. A group of kids build a make-believe world at home, using ordinary household and backyard objects. A tour led by the children shows how much can be made from everyday stuff when imagination takes charge.

The words and pictures work together to set up small moments of surprise. A ship turns out to be a table, a dark cave is really a laundry basket, and so on, as a day of building, playing and pretending winds down into bedtime. The collage-style illustrations are full of busy characters, and young readers are encouraged to use their own imaginations and storytelling skills to work out what the children are up to.

The rhymes make the book a good read-aloud. It is meant for parents, caregivers and childcare professionals, and especially for anyone looking for a book that celebrates creative play.
