Thunder Road

Summer 1947 brings a disappearance at the Fort Worth air base, where an Army Air Force major held a top-secret post. Because he has run up a large gambling debt to a local gangster, the mobster turns to Jefferson Sharp, a former Army Ranger whose fortunes have sunk, and asks him to track the officer down.

Sharp's search carries him through the back-room card games on Fort Worth's Thunder Road, across the empty ranchlands of New Mexico, and into newly built secret facilities in the Nevada desert. Deadly operatives and a military bureaucracy that refuses to explain itself stand in his way.

The case widens when Sharp comes across an otherworldly clue. At the same time, President Truman is forming a new Central Intelligence Agency and splitting the Air Force off from the Army, and Sharp starts to see how these events connect. Those connections lead to a cover-up protecting a secret from beyond Earth.
