Tovey has no choice but to keep moving after breaking away from the collective. A bowman pursues the defector as she plunges into the Tenbris, and the chase ends with her giving up and returning to serve the kingdom of Abolend.

Back in Abolend, Tovey learns of a prophecy claiming that King Mallum has been quietly searching the realm for a demon destined to bring chaos. The details match the strange circumstances of her own birth. Fearing what might be lurking inside her, she leaves the kingdom, determined to protect its people and herself.

Prince Cullus of Abolend makes an unexpected bargain with the very being he has dreaded all his life. In exchange for her freedom, she must cross into a rival kingdom and help bring an end to the coming war.
