About this book
Issued alongside a large retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art during summer 1998, this volume offers the first full overview of Tony Smith's output across architecture, painting, and sculpture.
Robert Storr assesses Smith's career in every medium, looking at how the artist related to the leading Abstract Expressionists of the 1950s, how he came to be linked with the Minimalist sculptors of the 1960s, and where he stands within American modernism. John Keenen examines the buildings Smith designed, both those constructed and those never realized. Joan Pachner contributes two essays on the paintings and drawings, and on the large sculptural forms.
More than 190 works are reproduced across three plate sections, covering architectural designs, drawings and paintings, and sculptural models alongside finished sculptures. An illustrated chronology traces the artist's life, while a section of writings, interviews, and letters presents Smith's own views together with recollections from family and friends. A selected bibliography and an exhibition history close the book.
