The book collects the catechisms written by Bishop Richard Challoner, who led the Catholic community in London as Vicar Apostolic. He worked during a bleak stretch of English Catholic history, when penal laws made the practice of the faith and its public worship illegal across the 1700s. Compared to Saint Athanasius, Challoner served with tireless dedication, building up the Church despite overwhelming obstacles. Many people consider him the foremost figure in English Catholicism, a judgment based on the great good he did for souls.
