Transatlantic Currents

Seventeen contributors, nine based in Europe and eight in the United States, have assembled sixteen chapters in the field of American Studies, where ideas move across national borders and meet in unexpected ways.

The chapters are organized around three central themes: technology and energy; place, space, and the environment; and the theory and method of American Studies itself.

The volume also honors David E. Nye, a leading figure in American Studies. Born in the United States but working in Europe, he spent nearly three decades heading the Center for American Studies at the University of Southern Denmark. Much of his scholarship has been devoted to those same three themes, and he has done a great deal to foster the scholarly exchanges that shape the field.
