About this book
This book explores how meaning is made and relationships are built through semiotic resources in what it calls transmodal communication. Its central framework, transpositioning, describes the many overlapping layers of place and position that people occupy when they communicate across boundaries that have long shaped how we understand the world and the people in it.
The chapters examine digital languaging and literacy practices and ask how these exchanges shape identities, senses of belonging, and relationships. Equity and social justice receive particular attention. Contributors draw on the ideas of transmodalities and critical cosmopolitanism.
The empirical material comes from a project that links young people online so they can share their lives with peers in diverse communities around the world that have limited resources. Data were analyzed from youth, adults, and researchers taking part. The volume brings together many perspectives and voices and addresses the methodological challenges of studying communication that spans the globe.
