Turn Where
About This Book
At eighteen, Chet'la Sebree left her parents' house in Delaware for college and started what she calls perfecting the art of leaving. Since then she has rarely held the same address for more than two years, moving between cities and countries in search of her next adventure. A poet, essayist and academic, she has loved travel since childhood, through family road trips, vacations with friends, study abroad programs in Europe, and writing residencies and jobs in faraway places. She also nursed a dream of her own Great American Road Trip in the spirit of Jack Kerouac, only seen through the eyes of a millennial Black woman. By then she was also thinking about the next stage of her life: settling down and beginning a fertility journey on her own. The pandemic seemed to offer the opening she needed to finally take to the road. Then came the murder of George Floyd, after the killings of Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and many others. Watching the country show its violence so openly, Sebree found herself asking where she could belong in a nation that was not built for people like her to survive, and what that meant for a child she might bring into it. Turn (W)here is her answer on the page. The essays blend memoir with history and cultural criticism, and they are tied together by movement, home, inheritance and belonging. They range across continents, landscapes and states of mind, and they offer company to wanderers and seekers, and to anyone pushed toward the unknown by the wish for a place that is truly theirs. Sebree is also the author of the poetry collection Field Study.
