About this book
Anne has always collected coins, but when she starts to suspect that her three older brothers are keeping a secret, she sets out to find out what it is. She learns that they have signed up to fight for the Union Army and will leave the following day. Wanting to send them off with something meaningful, she gives each brother one of her favorite two-cent pieces, parting with six of her special coins in all.
Anne hopes the words stamped on these coins will strengthen her brothers' faith. The two-cent pieces were the first coins to bear the inscription In God We Trust, and Anne shares a verse from the Psalms that she has just learned by heart, about the Lord being a refuge and fortress.
The story takes place during the American Civil War, when the brothers enlist in 1864. One of them, Thomas, begins to doubt his faith, until a miracle on the battlefield involving his coin changes things.
