Tyrell Racing
About This Book
Told from the viewpoint of one of the team's photographers, this book follows Tyrrell Racing from its beginnings in 1958, when Ken Tyrrell started the operation with Formula 3 and Formula 2 cars. Its first notable result came at the 1967 German Grand Prix, where Jacky Ickx took the F2 class in a Matra MS7. Words and illustrations together capture the excitement of those early years. The story moves on to 1968, when Jackie Stewart won three Grands Prix in a Matra MS10, and to 1969, when he and Tyrrell took the World Championship with the Matra MS80. The author then describes the shift from other manufacturers' chassis to a car designed in-house by Tyrrell, which brought immediate success in the early 1970s, with both the Drivers' and Constructors' titles claimed in 1971. The team won nine more Grands Prix over the next two seasons. The book also traces the team's gradual decline, as victories became rarer through the following decade. Tyrrell's last Grand Prix win came in 1983, and by 1998 the team no longer raced under its own name. The author shows that its influence still lives on in the Mercedes-AMG F1 team of today. Contributions from Jackie Stewart and from Bob and Kenneth Tyrrell add firsthand perspectives, and 180 official photographs are included. In a compact format, the volume offers a complete account of the team's history.
