Ultraviolet
About This Book
Eighth grade is a time of change for Elio. His body is changing, and so is his relationship with his pops, who signs them up for a father-son group to talk about puberty, manly stuff and being Mexican. Things get even more confusing around Camelia, his first girlfriend, whose golden aura distorts his vision. Then Elio learns that Camelia has been spending time with Chava, who has been pressuring her to kiss him. His emotions spiral and he wants revenge. He doesn't expect that a fight with Chava will put him in the hospital with a genuine heart condition, or that Camelia has no interest in being rescued. Elio has to work out what it means to be a man, a true friend and an ally. Told in poems full of color, humor and honesty, the book looks at consent, toxic masculinity and the emotional lives of boys, and questions the stereotypes about how boys are taught to behave. Its Chicano hero is a boy trying to decide who he wants to be, and the book is aimed at tweens and young teens.
