Uncivil X
About This Book
Chris Rhodes is eighteen when the novel opens, leaving the rural Georgia town where he grew up for Atlanta during the grunge years of the early 1990s. The move starts a search for who he is. The book follows him through a family that is coming apart, the lasting effects of an abusive childhood, and the walls he has built both around himself and inside his own head.
Along the way he takes a job at a country radio station, enrolls in college, and learns how often people break their promises. Although his story is his own, it echoes experiences shared by the sixty-five million members of Generation X, and the novel connects his personal account to that wider generational story.
This book follows Dweller On The Boundary, Chris M. Vise's 2020 debut. Chris, still a shy outsider, looks for his place in gay culture during the AIDS and safe-sex eras, in a world growing more interconnected, amid the culture wars, and within the puzzles of the human heart. The tone moves between comedy and shock and between raw sadness, and the whole narrative reads as a frank, unguarded confession.
