Uncle Vanya

Anton Chekhov's play is usually grouped with Three Sisters and The Cherry Orchard among his major works, and it is often cited as an early influence on modern theatre. It takes place on a country estate in Russia in the late nineteenth century.

The play looks closely at the stagnation of provincial middle-class life in Russia. Its central relationships revolve around two consuming romantic obsessions that go nowhere, along with a flirtation that ends in disaster.

Chekhov blends tragedy with absurdity and works in a dramatic form that leaves room for ambiguity and contradiction.
