Under the Deodars
About This Book
Under the Deodars gathers Kipling's stories of the British who made their lives in the hill station of Shimla at the turn of the twentieth century. They are light and witty, and they look at how these settlers bent their private lives to fit the demands of Empire. In one story, a society woman sets out to "educate" a man and runs into plenty of impropriety for her trouble. In another, a small circle of European settlers finds itself socially compromised by one another's infidelities. In a third, a woman dismissed as second-rate wins the respect of the women of Shimla. The three stories are "The Education of Otis Yeere", "A Wayside Comedy" and "A Second-Rate Woman". The collection reads as a sharp, amused portrait of colonial hill-station society.
