Unexpectedly
About This Book
Unexpectedly is a collection of poems about life in Sri Lanka from the 1970s to the present. The poems are written from the in-between space of war and peace, through the pandemic, and at the edge of political chaos and personal crisis. They move from the personal to the political, the social, the intellectual and the philosophical. Universal subjects such as humanity, time, feminism, violence and death sit alongside lived experience: the poet's career in academia, her encounters with illness, and the gains and costs of her husband's political career. The voices vary. They can be passionate or tranquil, measured or nonchalant, ironic or sincere. The result is poetry that is haunting and imaginative, instinctive and historical at once.
