Unseen
About This Book
Unseen is not a conventional biography, and it does not follow Deepinder Goyal in a straight line from boyhood to success. Megha Vishwanath instead studies the founder of Zomato as a man who is drawn to contradiction rather than comfort. He is restless but intensely focused, and he keeps taking on high stakes and uncertain odds. The book opens at the summit. In July 2021 Zomato listed on the stock market, the first Indian tech unicorn to do so, yet Goyal himself seemed strangely unmoved by the celebration around him. From there Vishwanath goes back into the years that produced that moment, tracing the story of a boy with a stutter from small-town Punjab who became the reluctant public face of a company worth billions. Vishwanath, a former journalist, builds her account from hundreds of interviews with the people who worked alongside Goyal, clashed with him, or simply followed his lead as he built, broke and rebuilt. What emerges is a mosaic of private struggles, questions with no easy answers and snap decisions that shaped one of the biggest companies of its era. It is a portrait of ambition without vanity, talent without showmanship, and a success that does not bring calm.
