Unseen
About This Book
Molly Burke was four years old when she was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa, a rare degenerative eye disease that leads to blindness. Unseen is her memoir of what it has been like to live as a blind woman in a world built for sighted people. She is a social media star and change-maker, and she tells her story with vulnerability, honesty and dark humour. Being disabled did not stop her from playing sports, working as a rock-climbing instructor or winning a beauty pageant. What did hold her back was the narrow way other people saw her. Her life has swung between very different extremes: years of relentless bullying, toxic workplaces, a rodent-infested apartment and other low points on one side, and red carpets, first-class flights and personal and professional successes on the other. She has come to appreciate that duality, and above all she has learned the value of being unapologetically herself and standing up for her beliefs. Molly follows her path as a disabled woman, entrepreneur and entertainer, and reflects on what her experiences have taught her and what she hopes others can take from her setbacks and achievements. Part memoir and part call for a more compassionate and empathetic world, the book recounts her fight against the expectations society placed on her and encourages readers to find their own voice, inner strength and self-acceptance.
