Unsolaced
About This Book
Unsolaced is Gretel Ehrlich's account of a long search for home. It draws on her travels in Greenland, at the North Pole, on California's Channel Islands and in Japan, and on her work herding animals in Wyoming and Montana. Throughout, she tries to keep the ordinary and the celestial in balance. Thirty-five years earlier, in The Solace of Open Spaces, Ehrlich set out to bring the physical character of the earth, meaning weather, light and wind, into contemporary writing. Here she looks at how those same forces have shaped what she has lived through and what she understands. She recalls friendships that frayed at the edges and became joined to new loves, houses she built and lived in, and conversations that changed how she saw things. All the while she tries to catch sight of herself and of the places she has relied on to anchor her spirit. The quest here is not for the comfort of permanence but for transience, for the need to stay unsettled and to find stillness within the unrest of being engaged with the world. Ehrlich looks for the possibility of longing in landscapes of earth and ice, in climate, in genetic upheaval and in the shifting canvas of memory. Her voice blends poetry with science, and her attention stays fixed on the vegetation and animals she tends. Her moments of lyrical insight point toward something larger than any one life.
