Up and Down

A boy and his penguin companion spend nearly every moment together. When the penguin begins to long for the sky, the boy insists that it can never happen, but the idea will not leave the penguin alone.

Setting off on his own, the penguin travels from one place to the next, testing each one for a way to lift off the ground. Along the way he wonders whether flying will live up to his hopes, and whether the boy back home misses him as much as he misses the boy.

Written and illustrated by Oliver Jeffers, a Northern Irish creator known for picture books such as How to Catch a Star and The Incredible Book Eating Boy, this story explores friendship, affection and the pull of big ambitions. It is intended for readers aged three to five.
