Us Fools
About This Book
Us Fools is a tragicomic coming-of-age novel about two precocious sisters growing up during the Midwestern farm crisis of the 1980s. Joanne and Bernadette Fareown are raised on the family farm in rural Illinois, deeply affected by their parents' volatile marriage and mounting debt, and haunted by the cursed history of the women in their family.
Largely left to themselves, the sisters teach themselves about Greek mythology, feminism and Virginia Woolf. They realize they will have to find their own ways of coping in a hostile environment, and they question the American Dream while the rest of the country turns its back on their struggling community. Jo and Bernie's inventive plans for escape fall short against the realities their parents face, and the family eventually leaves the farm for Chicago.
There, Joanne, who is free-spirited, reckless and unable to tame her inner violence, rebels in ever more desperate ways. After her worst breakdown yet, she goes into exile in Deadhorse, Alaska. It falls to Bernadette to draw on everything she has learned from her sister and bring back some hope in a failing world.
This is Nora Lange's debut novel, a portrait of two idiosyncratic sisters who are determined to endure the worst that capitalism and circumstance can throw at them.
