Theodore Sturgeon, born Edward Hamilton Waldo, wrote this 1960 science fiction novel. It follows a visitor to Ruth, a utopian community where the division between the sexes has been set aside, and it asks what human relationships might look like without that division.

The book sits among Sturgeon's most discussed works and is aimed at adult readers who enjoy speculative fiction about society, identity and human nature.
