Victor Halfwit

On a midwinter night, with deep snow lying over the mountains and forests of Austria, a doctor is crossing the ridge from Traich to Föding to visit a patient. In the darkness he stumbles over a body and fears it is a corpse. It is not. The figure is the wooden-legged Victor Halfwit, collapsed in the snow but still very much alive. This is the opening of an absurd and tragic fable by the Austrian playwright, novelist and poet Thomas Bernhard.

This edition pairs Bernhard's darkly comic text with colourful collages by the Indian designer Sunandini Banerjee. Illustrated in colour throughout, it is presented as a collectible artist's book with an unconventional design. It is aimed at readers who know Bernhard's other work and at visual artists who may be drawn to it.
