About this book
Martha's Vineyard is a postcard of calm, yet trouble follows people there too. Annie Sutton writes mysteries for a living, and she has also just opened the Vineyard Inn. Her engagement to Sergeant John Lyons, a local policeman, should be a time for planning a wedding, but the two keep clashing over his older daughter, a difficult teenager who has returned home and brought turmoil with her.
Annie's brother is far away, dealing with a challenging journey of his own, so she turns to a guest at the Inn, Mary Beth Mullen. Mary Beth is gentle and open, and Annie grows close to her quickly. Then Mary Beth reveals a secret that leaves Annie caught between her loyalty to her family and a promise she once made.
The arrival of a handsome journalist with an international reputation adds more problems. A candid photograph, taken without consent and posted online, drags Annie into a fresh mess while her relationship with John grows more strained. Instead of leaving matters to the police, Annie decides to investigate on her own, with Mary Beth at her side. As the summer goes on, she begins to doubt that anyone on the island is quite who they appear to be, and she must work out who her genuine friends are.
