Violet Shrink
About This Book
Violet Shrink does not like parties. Crowds and loud noise give her a stomachache and sweaty hands. She would far rather be on her own, watching birds in the backyard, reading comics or listening to music through her purple headphones. The trouble is that the rest of the Shrink family adores parties with loud music, games and dancing. At her cousin Char's birthday, Violet hides under a table and imagines she is a shark gliding through the water in search of food. At Auntie Marlene and Uncle Leli's anniversary party, she sits by herself at the top of the stairs and pictures herself as a snake slithering high in the branches. When she hears that the Shrink family reunion is coming up, Violet gathers her courage and talks to her dad. Together they find a solution. The story treats shyness and social anxiety as normal, shows how imagination can help children cope with anxiety, and shows the value of a child telling a parent how they feel and being listened to. The text is by Christine Baldacchino, and Carmen Mok provides the illustrations, which capture Violet's emotions and her vivid imagination. The picture book is a gentle addition to children's titles about mental health.
