Virtuoso

Jana spent her early childhood in Czechoslovakia, where the State Security watched ordinary people closely, and her days were shaped by secret surveillance and the quiet work of the regime's photographers. Her life stayed muted and uneventful until Zorka, a dark-haired girl, entered it and changed everything.

Years later, Jana works as an interpreter in Paris. She has not seen Zorka in ten years, and the memory of that friendship still follows her.

In Paris, Aimée is settled in a happy marriage with her wife, Dominique. An ordinary attempt to open a hotel room door turns into a disturbing moment that unsettles her entire life.

The novel moves back and forth through time and between cities, following Aimée and Jana as their stories gradually draw closer together. Yelena Moskovich's Virtuoso explores love, desire, identity and the search for a place to belong, with a dreamlike atmosphere and a sense of building tension.
