Vow
About This Book
Vow is a work of feminist historical fiction about the painter Angelica Kauffman, written by Jude Berman for readers who enjoyed Dawn Tripp's Georgia and Whitney Scharer's The Age of Light. Angelica is a child prodigy in eighteenth-century Italy, accused of dressing as a boy so she can study in the great galleries. She is set on becoming a history painter, a career closed to women, and she has vowed never to marry so that nothing stands in her way. A new patron invites her to London. There she befriends famous artists, paints portraits of Queen Charlotte and other royalty, and becomes a founding member of the Royal Academy. While she is still in London, a charming but mysterious Swedish count makes her an offer she may find hard to refuse. After she returns to Italy, she meets Wolfgang von Goethe. As an independent woman, Angelica meets one obstacle after another and has to make real personal sacrifices. Each of the vows she makes, large and small, is tested again and again. The novel asks whether she can break free from the rigid male and female roles and the oppressive social rules of her era and learn to paint from the soul, or whether a different kind of vow is needed if she is to follow the deepest call of her heart.
