About this book
Leaving a controlling group, a harmful relationship, or a destructive cult can leave you asking what comes next. Chris Shelton, who spent 27 years in Scientology before leaving, draws on a Master's degree in the psychology of coercive control to address that question. The book is written for people who have walked away from high-control environments, for those raised inside them, for family and friends who want to support someone recovering, and for readers who are simply interested in undue influence.
Shelton argues that getting out of a group is only the first step. The harder work is untangling the beliefs that were instilled, setting aside guilt that was never really yours to carry, and recovering your own ability to think. The early chapters explain how coercive control operates, including the manipulative tactics and specialized vocabulary used to get around a person's critical thinking.
The book also looks at why survivors often still feel a jolt of fear or panic long after leaving, examining how trauma from prolonged abuse shapes the nervous system and emotional responses. Shelton introduces his own framework, the REM Model of Behavior, which examines how a person's reasoning, emotions, and sense of morality can be exploited.
Later sections focus on rebuilding a sense of self, including reclaiming independent thought and setting healthy boundaries, and on moving from simply surviving toward a life that feels genuinely fulfilling.
