When Heroes Fall

The narrator considers herself the antagonist of her own life. A broken engagement, a family that has long been disappointed in her, and childhood wounds that still follow her have led her to shut down her feelings entirely.

Then she meets Dante Salvatore, widely regarded as the most notorious mafia figure of the current century. He is intensely passionate, unmistakably wicked, and dangerous to know, everything she has trained herself to avoid. Still, she ends up defending him in the largest criminal case of the decade, and she is drawn to him.

Absorbed in winning and in the success she feels she has earned, she fails to notice how strongly he affects her until it is too late. Her carefully guarded detachment begins to thaw in his presence. She refuses to let him fall without a fight, even though a future with him would cost her the life she knew and much of what she held dear.
