Whiteout
About This Book
Over the past twenty years, the media repeatedly showed the American opioid epidemic as an unexpectedly white crisis. Whiteout asks why it took that shape and argues that the answer lies partly in race. Many observers have blamed rising overdose deaths among white Americans on economic hardship and social decay. The authors contend that white racial privilege also played a central role. Presented as the first critical analysis of how whiteness fueled the opioid crisis, the book relies on interviews, data, and first-person accounts from three specialists: an addiction psychiatrist, a policy advocate, and a historian of drug use. Together, these perspectives trace roughly a century of racism built into drug policy and into profit-driven medical industries. The book examines racially segregated health care systems, the racial assumptions held by researchers who study addiction, and weak oversight of pharmaceutical marketing aimed at white consumers. The result is a blunt account of how racial capitalism harms all Americans.
