Robin Lewis has come home to England after nearly five years abroad, only to be seized and accused of heresy by Mary, the Queen, who is close to death. Robin must travel for several days to the Tower of London, and as he goes he passes the time by telling his captor about his past under three Tudor monarchs. Beneath the storytelling lies his own reckoning, since he must face a judgment from the Queen and from a God he turned away from long ago.

The novel is built around a single question: can the journey and Robin's tales last long enough for him to be rescued by the young Elizabeth, Mary's heir. Every mile and every memory carries weight, and the story keeps the reader inside that pressure.
