Corvos was once a lush, untamed forest world, but an interstellar empire has taken it over and reduced its original inhabitants to slavery. A few of them still refuse to accept their fate and dream of rebellion.

In the deep tunnels of Mine Three, Cerrin is a young captive with a fierce temper. Each day she calls on the god of war, begging for even the smallest opportunity to strike back at the enforcers who hold her. Those enforcers, sealed inside armored combat suits, seem impossible to harm, and their tools look like sorcery to the people they oppress.

Cerrin has no idea what is unfolding in orbit above her world. There, an aging military officer welcomes a new civilian overseer, a cruel nobleman who intends to make this neglected planet serve his ambitions. The arrival of this new menace also brings a glimmer of unexpected hope, and the uprising finally begins.
