About This Book
In 1822, Charleston, South Carolina, stood on the brink of one of the largest uprisings of enslaved people in American history. More than two thousand enslaved Africans, guided by Denmark Vesey, a freeman, were preparing a violent rising against the city's white slaveholders. As the heat of early summer settled over the low country, suspicion between Black residents and whites had built to the point where a single spark could set everything off. Jesse is enslaved by a cruel and wealthy plantation owner, and he struggles to remain close to his daughter, Moon, who belongs to another family. When he and Moon learn that a revolt is coming, they are pulled into the plot. Their choices are stark: take up arms with the rebels or die alongside the white population. If the rebellion fails, the gallows wait for them. Every move they make must be careful and deliberate, since each step draws them closer to disaster. The novel took twenty-five years to bring to completion. It portrays slavery in the antebellum South and centers on the little-known history of Vesey's rebellion.
