Winter Burn

A solar ejection strikes the western hemisphere on a bitterly cold winter day, triggering a catastrophe on a scale the world has never seen. Sixteen-year-old Allie is already unhappy with her life before the disaster, and she has good reason to be. In the past year, her family has been upended: her parents have lost their jobs, they have lost their house, and Allie now has to rely on unauthorized Wi-Fi connections. Worst of all, her seventeen-year-old brother has brain cancer, and Allie cannot imagine anything more terrible.

On the morning the storm hits, Allie and her mother are forty miles from home, picking up medication her brother badly needs. The solar event turns their plans upside down and sends them on a nightmarish journey. Allie is single-minded. To her, the scorched landscape around them is not the real end of the world. The real disaster would be getting home too late to see her brother survive.
