Wise & Otherwise
About This Book
Sudha Murty spent years travelling across India, running social work projects and meeting people from every background, and this book gathers fifty short pieces drawn from what she saw and heard along the way. Each one is a small true story, and together they show how differently people behave when kindness, greed, pride or fear is put to the test. Some of the accounts are hard to forget. A man abandons his elderly father in an old-age home and tells the staff the old man is a stranger with nowhere to go. In the Sahyadri hills, a tribal chief shows the author that receiving a gift graciously can be an act of humility as much as giving one. A woman close to death still makes sure to thank the person who helped her. The range is wide, from remarkable generosity to petty and cruel behaviour, and Murty reports all of it plainly. She writes with dry humour and a direct, unshowy voice, and she leaves readers to draw their own conclusions about what they have just read. The collection first appeared in 2002 and has sold more than 30,000 copies in English, with translations into all the major Indian languages. This revised edition suits anyone who likes short, human stories that prompt a little reflection on themselves and the people around them.
