Wonder
About This Book
Auggie Pullman is about to start fifth grade, and he has never been inside a regular school. He was born with a facial difference, and until now his education has happened at home. When he enrolls at Beecher Prep, all he wants is to be treated like any other kid. His new classmates, though, have a hard time looking past his face. The story opens in Auggie's own voice, wry and guarded, with a refusal to describe himself because he assumes whatever you imagine is worse. Then the narration widens. His classmates, his older sister, her boyfriend and other people around him each take a turn, so the same events are seen from several sides, and the reader sees how much each person is carrying that Auggie never knows about. Together these voices build a picture of a school community being tested on the values it claims to hold. Some characters fail that test, some surprise themselves, and friendship turns out to take a quieter kind of courage than anyone expected. R. J. Palacio's debut novel is funny, tender and often moving, and she has described it as a meditation on kindness. It is a story about empathy and acceptance, and about a boy who could never blend in because he was made to stand out.
