Working Cotton

This picture book follows a child through a long day of work in the cotton fields, showing migrant farm life through her eyes. The text is spare and poetic, written by poet Sherley Anne Williams, and it presents a family's labor in a fresh and moving way.

Carole Byard's impressionist paintings illustrate the book. It was named a Caldecott Honor Book in 1993, and its restrained language and imagery give it appeal for older readers as well as young ones.
