About this book
Working Together starts from the idea that the racial and gender reckonings of the #BLM and #MeToo movements expose biases that reach into every part of life, including work. The book points out that the events behind these movements include the deaths of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, xenophobic acts against Asian people during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the sexual violence committed by Harvey Weinstein. In each case, people were harassed, stereotyped, demeaned or victimized in a work context, since police officers and film producers were doing their jobs when they committed these acts. The book asks what is happening in American workplaces that allows this, and what leaders can do to bring about lasting change.
It argues that organizational leaders now have both the opportunity and the obligation to build strategy and practice that support diversity, equity, and inclusion. To help them, the book presents current science and practice. Expert scholars and professionals combine case studies with large-scale, robust evidence.
Readers are guided to recognize why diversity, equity, and inclusion matter in organizations, to identify their own personal barriers and those within their organizations, and to set out strategies for positive and lasting change.
