In a future not as distant as it might seem, research laboratories chase commercial gain, and cutting-edge technology is left too loosely watched. The result is a hazard that could undermine the foundations of human life.

Sammy is a laboratory rat who has been given human genes. His unusually powerful mind helps him get out of the lab and into a world that is poorly prepared for what he has become. The modifications that sharpened his intellect also made him acutely aware of the cruelty people inflict on animals in the name of science.

Sammy also inherits a rat's tendency to breed often. That combination gives him the potential to raise a rodent army that could overwhelm the human race.
