Zara and Ella both arrived two weeks late for the start of the school year, and they have been best friends ever since. They spend their time on harmless games: looking up the star signs of boys they fancy, reading out horoscopes, and trying to work out the initial of the boy they will marry. It all helps take their minds off exams and tests.
Ella has never taken any of it seriously. Then Zara begins to change. She starts dressing like a Goth and exploring a new spiritual side and supposed psychic powers, hoping to get the pair noticed by the popular crowd in their class and win them some respect.
Ella has no idea how far Zara is willing to go to get the attention she wants, even if it means betraying their friendship. The novel looks at the manipulation, mind games and power struggles that can play out within groups of friends at school, and at the lives of teenage girls in that world.
