A Promise Left Unkept

“Daddy is so embarrassing... haha...!” A giggling sound came from his beautiful daughter Sara. Her dad was dancing on the ground, not because he had won something, but because Sara had won first prize in the running competition.
Yes, this was a story between a dad and a daughter who shared an unbreakable bond of love. Anyone in this entire world would get jealous of the bond they shared.
As usual, Sara would always ask, “Whom do you love the most, Daddy?”
He would smile and say, “You are the one, my dear Sara. I will always be with you, no matter what. You are the one I cherish the most.” These are the words that always came from his mouth.
Next week, during the holidays... Dad’s friends invited him on a long trip. They were all very close friends, so he agreed to go.
Sara’s eyes filled with tears. She had never stayed away from her dad for this long. Finally, he hugged her and said, “I’ll come back to you as soon as possible.” Sara smiled through her tears. “I’ll be waiting for you, Daddy.” None of them knew that would be their last hug and last kiss.
During the trip, everything felt normal. Everyone was enjoying themselves and taking pictures. Sara kept calling him and saying, “Daddy, next time we should come here together.” He laughed and replied, “Sure.” The trip ended. They started their night journey back home on their bikes.
Just twenty minutes away from home, everything changed. A speeding lorry crashed into them. Sara’s dad and his friend died on the spot. When the police reached their house, Sara’s mother broke down completely. She couldn’t believe she had lost the man she loved so deeply. Sara didn’t understand what was happening.
When the police vehicle arrived carrying her father’s body, she stood there in shock. She looked at him and asked, “Why is Daddy sleeping? Why did you bring him like this?” Her heart understood the truth, but her mind refused to accept it. She cried as she saw him.
“Daddy... you promised you would always be with me. Get up. You said you would come back as soon as possible. Come on, Daddy... let’s go somewhere...” But he never opened his eyes.
Life moved on.
Sara grew up with a void that never left her. Whenever she saw a father holding his daughter’s hand, her heart whispered the same words she never outgrew. “Daddy... you promised you would always be with me. Why did you break your promise? I wish you were here with me now.”
Even today, every time she crosses a road, she remembers him.
It’s a promise that was broken, not by choice, but by fate.
