The Boy Who Measured the Wind

The village of Suryagaon had one problem that no one could solve.
Every summer, the wind disappeared.
For nearly three months each year, not a single breeze passed through the valley. The air became unbearably hot, crops dried quickly, and the village's traditional windmills stood completely still. Farmers called it The Silent Season. Scientists had studied the area for years but found no clear explanation.
Most people accepted it as nature.
Sixteen-year-old Dev Malhotra did not.
Dev loved building simple scientific instruments from everyday materials. His room was filled with homemade rain gauges, barometers, tiny weather stations, and notebooks recording daily temperatures and wind speeds. While other teenagers spent their evenings playing games, Dev climbed the nearby hills to observe clouds and record weather patterns.
One afternoon, while comparing five years of observations, he noticed something unusual.
The wind always disappeared on exactly the same week every year.
It couldn't be a coincidence.

Dev stared at the drawings.
"If those walls are interrupting the natural airflow..."
He never finished the sentence.
The four friends climbed the ridge before sunrise.
Standing behind the warehouse, they immediately felt a strong, cool breeze.
The wind was there.
It simply wasn't reaching the village anymore.
Returning home, Dev created a detailed model using cardboard hills and a small electric fan. The experiment clearly showed how the enormous warehouse redirected airflow over the valley instead of through it.
However, proving the theory would not be easy.
The warehouse had been built legally.
Its owners insisted it had no environmental impact.
The village council remained unconvinced.

Just then, Tara received an email.

The winning proposal would receive funding—and a panel of expert scientists would review every project.
Dev looked at his friends and smiled.
"This isn't just about winning a competition."
"It's about bringing the wind back."
With only three weeks remaining before the national finals, the four friends began designing an idea that could change the future of their village forever.
The next three weeks were the busiest the four friends had ever experienced.

Meera created detailed maps and illustrations showing how the landscape had changed over time. Dev combined everything into a working demonstration.

More than a hundred student teams from across the country presented projects on clean energy, water conservation, and pollution control.
When it was their turn, Dev placed the valley model on the table.
A powerful fan represented the natural wind.
At first, the cardboard warehouse blocked the airflow completely.
Tiny paper windmills in the model village stopped turning.
Then Rehan added the angled wind-guiding panels.
The breeze flowed smoothly around the structure and reached the miniature village again.
The paper windmills spun rapidly.
The judges leaned forward with interest.
One of them, an environmental engineer, asked, "If your theory is correct, how would you test it in the real world?"
Dev replied confidently, "We propose building temporary panels from recyclable materials for one month. If the wind returns, the data will speak for itself."
The judges nodded.
Two weeks later, the team received exciting news.
Their project had won first prize, along with a grant to conduct a real pilot study.
Working together with local engineers, village leaders, and even the warehouse owners, the students installed temporary wind-guiding panels along the northern ridge.
Everyone waited.
On the third evening, something wonderful happened.
A gentle breeze flowed into Suryagaon.
Children ran outside, laughing as colorful kites climbed into the sky.
The old windmills began turning for the first time in months.
Farmers smiled as cool air swept across their drying fields.
After several weeks of successful testing, permanent eco-friendly panels were installed.

During a village celebration, the head farmer thanked the four friends.

Dev looked toward the spinning windmills.
