The Rain That Made Her Pause

"I'm going home. It's too cloudy," Pooja told her friend. After a long gap, they finally planned to meet at a café. They spent a few hours talking about life before Pooja dropped her friend at home.
Suddenly, the weather had completely changed. She didn't expect it to rain. But as soon as she started riding, heavy rain began pouring.
She quickly stopped at a nearby bus stand. It was already crowded. Everyone was trying to fit into that small shelter. She had no other choice, so she stood there quietly.
As time passed, people slowly left. Some were picked up by their family members. Some left with umbrellas. After a while, only a few people remained.
Pooja simply stood there watching the raindrops. Suddenly, she remembered something her Tamil teacher had told the class when she was in sixth standard.
"Between the raindrops, mosquitoes fly."
Back then, the whole class laughed. Even Pooja kept looking at the rain, trying to find those tiny mosquitoes between the falling drops. As the years passed, she completely forgot about that memory. But today, standing under the bus stop and watching the same rain after so many years, it came back to her unexpectedly. A small smile appeared on her face. It's funny how some childhood memories stay hidden somewhere in our hearts and return only when life brings us back to the same moment.
Just then, her phone rang. It was her daughter.
"Amma, why haven't you come home yet?"
"I got stuck in the rain, ma. I'll come as soon as the rain stops," Pooja replied.
"Amma... did you remember the velvet cake I asked for?"
Pooja smiled.
"Yes, ma. I'll bring it."
"For the past week, you've been saying the same thing. Every day, before taking the scooter, you'll think about buying it. But once you leave, you'll start thinking about work and forget it. Will you really bring it today?"
Pooja smiled helplessly.
Before she could answer, her daughter said, "It's okay, Amma. It's raining. Come home safely. We can buy the cake tomorrow."
"I'll see you soon," Pooja said and disconnected the call.
She looked at her phone for a few seconds.
Life had become so busy that even a small promise to her daughter had been forgotten again and again. Every day felt the same. Work, responsibilities, and endless thoughts. Somewhere in between, she had forgotten to slow down. She wasn't living every moment anymore. She was simply moving from one responsibility to another like a machine.
Maybe that's why these few minutes of rain felt different. They gave her a little space to breathe. She looked around.
An old couple was sitting on the bench. It was cold. They had no sweater or blanket. Still, they managed to stay warm by holding each other's hands and leaning on each other's shoulders. Looking at them made Pooja smile. These days, breakups have become so easy. People play with feelings without thinking twice. But couples like them remind us that love still exists. She smiled to herself.
"Maybe one day, I'll also experience a love that stays."
On the other side, one man was standing alone. He wasn't even looking at the rain. He was lost in his own thoughts. Pooja felt bad for him. Maybe something had happened in his life.
After all, who ignores such beautiful rain unless their heart is carrying something heavier?
Suddenly, a couple started arguing. A young man had come to pick up his girlfriend. "Why are you always late?" she asked angrily. "The bike didn't start... I'm sorry," he replied. For a moment, Pooja thought the argument would continue. Instead, the girl quietly got on the bike, and they left together.
Pooja simply observed everything around her.
An old couple.
A lonely man.
A couple arguing.
Different people. Different emotions. Different stories.
Standing under the same roof because of the same rain.
We spend most of our lives running behind money, career, success, and responsibilities. Somewhere in between, we forget to enjoy these small moments.
Today, the rain reminded Pooja to slow down. The rain slowly stopped. She started her scooter and continued her journey.
Sometimes, all we need is a little rain to remind us that life was never missing happiness.
We were just too busy to notice it.
Pooja smiled, started her scooter, and this time stopped at the bakery to buy the velvet cake.
