Awakening

Gavin Cross wakes in a city he has never seen, with no idea how he got there. His first desperate act unlocks a magical power that he has to master quickly, since without control it will destroy him.

The man who can teach him is Marcus, a practitioner of great age who has gathered a vast store of lost knowledge. Marcus treats feats that others call impossible as routine. When he takes Gavin on as his first apprentice in many years, Gavin finds that the townsfolk and officials he meets are wary of him, and some are openly afraid.

Gavin soon uncovers a scheme to undermine and topple the society around him. He is then caught between two threats: the rulers, who would rather see him dead, and a traitor who is actively hunting him. He has to find a way out that neither of them has planned for.
