A wolf is tearing through Timber Ridge, and the people it attacks are being changed into werewolves against their wishes. The transformation is risky and bloody, and the narrator is convinced it is no accident: someone is causing it on purpose. She intends to track that person down, even if she must push her newly awakened magic to its limits to do so.

Her most useful ally is Greyson, the leader of the local pack and the strongest wolf in the Midwest, who is always ready to join a hunt. The problem is that she is beginning to be drawn to him, which she knows is a terrible idea. His mate bond is incomplete, and because she is a hunter, she can never become a wolf's mate.

She has always been comfortable on her own. She hunts werewolves rather than belonging to the pack, but that independence becomes a dangerous position while a rogue wolf roams free.
